“Sea elephant Oceanographers”
The goal of this program is to show how scientists study their feeding habits in the Antarctic and their relationships with the marine environment. Sea elephants from Kerguelen Island, South Georgia, and Macquarie Island, equipped with Argo sensors measure the seawater temperature and salinity. Pupils can use the data recorded by the sensors to observe the sea elephants’ movements.

“Monitoring king penguin populations in Crozet and Kerguelen Islands”
Join the scientists to study the penguins’ migration patterns in relation to environmental conditions and the influence of the climate change on the reproduction.

« The research vessel Polarstern: Mission in the Antarctic »
During a three week expedition to the Drake Passage area of the Antarctic, scientists deployed several buoys into the ocean in order to analyse the water mass circulation, especially in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Buoys were recorded physical and chemical data such as the water temperature, salinity and pressure… Pupils who participate in this educational project will be able to use the data recorded by the buoys and follow their drift in one of the most important oceanic currents.

« Following the Argos Floats »
Under this program pupils can observe the trajectory of different Argo buoys spread out in different oceanic basins. During their dives up to 1000 or 2000 meters, these buoys record temperature and salinity data. After several days of underwater drift, they resurface and transmit this information by satellite before they drift again for another journey under the sea.
Pupils can observe the evolution of these buoys and feel the oceans’ heartbeat in real time.

« Make your own weather station »
Each class participating in this adventure can create its own station with the help of EUR-OCEANS educational cards. Every week, through our website, they will be able to compare and share the data they have collected with that of the other schools across Europe.
